Conscious and Subconscious Mind: How do they relate, how how are the two parts of  the mind connected with each other? How can we use the power of the Subconscious mind? How can we use our whole mind to achieve our desired goals?

Whenever I have to explain the relationship between the Conscious and the Subconscious Mind and give a quick definition about how they can work together to our advantage I use this example:

Imagine that the mind is like a cowboy riding his horse. Or a Pony Express if you prefer, going from one Post Station to the next one. If the mind can be seen as the cowboy on his horse we can say that the cowboy is the Conscious mind, what we are aware of at any given moment, where we consciously decide what we want to do. In this example going from one place to another. Even if we could travel on feet it would take a longer time and it would be pretty hard, or exhausting.

The horse is the Subconscious mind which we can use to reach our destination, our desired outcome, faster and much more relaxed. Because clearly the Subconscious is more powerful and more aware of our abilities but the horse needs to be directed where we want to go; we must show him the way, so to speak. That is we usually have to use our Conscious mind to use efficiently the power of the Subconscious mind.

Just like with a horse we need reins to direct the powers of the Subconscious mind to reach our goal or destination. Having a horse without reins is just as exhausting as having to walk all the way so, to become a kind of team working toward a common goal, we need a good connection and communication between the Conscious and the Subconscious mind.

This can be easily achieved using two tools:

  • Our breath

  • Visualization

When we breathe we make a connection between the Conscious and the Subconscious mind. Now I’m breathing automatically and unconsciously but if I begin to breathe deeply with my belly I move my consciousness to my breath transforming an unconscious, automatic act into a conscious one.

Visualizing, since the Subconscious uses and understands only images and feelings, communicates what we, the Conscious mind, want to achieve, clearly and without doubts or misunderstandings.

This is how the Conscious and the Subconscious mind are related and connected. And this is how, with our reins, we can more easily reach our destination and achieve our desired outcome. Just like a cowboy riding his horse on the plains. That’s how we can use the power of Subconscious mind.

Now, tell me what you think.

Great analogy of the subconscious mind being like the horse.  This is perfect because in the same way that the subconscious is more powerful it is also in many ways slave or servant to the conscious mind.  Wherever we direct our focus (be it to our benefit or detriment) the subconscious mind will move heaven and earth to make our thoughts become reality.

You're right, whether they are for our good or not. These two parts of our mind can influence each other but in the long time the Subconscious finds a way to do what it thinks is our good, even if sometimes it's the contrary. MMany times it's just a matter of miscommunications, when the Conscious communicates easily and correctly with the Subconscious there is very little we can't do. That's the goal of Hypnosis though. :)

I think this is a perfect and easily understandable explanation of the relationship between the subconcious and the concious mind.  I came to your site in order to get some information that would help me with a weight loss client that I have. He is different than most of my clients in that he shows little confidence in his speaking and manerisms that hypnosis will work to help him change negative behaviors.  I want to explain to him that he must believe that he can make the changes with the help of his subconcious mind through hypnosis, but that he must believe with his concious mind in order to let the process work.  Your analogy seems to me to be the perfect way of explaining it to him.  I will see him today and hope to help him make this very important shift. Thank you.

@mjr451 Hi Michael, thank you very much for your words, it's a honor if this article can be useful for a fellow Hypnotherapist. And I share your hope that your client can find a way to use Hypnosis successfully. As you know it's probably just a matter of finding the right angle. I'm going to write a longer article soon on the relationship between the Conscious and the Subconscious mind. I hope you'll find it interesting too. Let me know how it goes with your client.

Have a great day! :)
