Positive Suggestions in Hypnotherapy

Published on 20/01/2012 by

The use of positive suggestions in Hypnotherapy, also called positive affirmations, comes from a man named Emile Couè, a French psychologist and pharmacist who was the first to use them to treat clients. He can be surely defined as one of the fathers of Self Improvement and actually the whole positive affirmations thing comes from him.

What was his most important discover? That using the Conscious mind we can influence and reprogram the Subconscious mind. So, it’s true that the Subconscious controls almost everything within us and that sometimes it works as it sees fit and not how we think it should but thanks to Emile Couè we know that it can work also the other way round. He demonstrated that consciously repeating a positive sentence and imagining it to have real effects we can influence the Subconscious and transform our life obtaining our desired outcome. The basis of the whole positive affirmations theory.

The main work of Emile Couè was Self Mastery through Conscious Auto Suggestions which you can find free at this link. Clearly positive suggestions do not work simply by repeating them, he made the client to relax first than he taught to use the famous sentence “Every day in every way I’m getting better and better” and then to imagine that the sentence was taking effect. Said differently relaxation – suggestion – imagine the desired outcome. Something that if you read my article you already know right?

I strongly agree with his theories, especially because they really work.

Positive suggestions in Hypnotherapy can be used in two ways, either by the Hypnotist who is treating you or by yourself with Self Hypnosis. Which is my way to use them: first during your Self Hypnosis daily session and then throughout the day, in the morning, in the evening and whenever you find the time. Actually, you just have to say 20 times a sentence and this won’t take too much time, right?

While everyone agrees that a general suggestion like the one above works well in every respect if you have a specific illness or target to work on it’s better to use a targeted affirmation in the morning and in the evening while during the day the general “Every day in every way I’m getting better and better” is just fine. You can find many lists of positive affirmations which you can use and adapt for your own goals.

So, to summarize how to use positive suggestions in Hypnotherapy: Relaxation – Suggestion – Imagination. And during the day: 10 belly breaths – Suggestion. Imagination.

As easy as it can be, but it can really transform your life. If you like there are a couple of articles which goes well with this one: Hypnotize Yourself: How to Relax at Will and How to Manifest with Intentions as well as the category List of Affirmations where you can find all my posts on this topic.

Now, are you ready to use positive suggestions or would you like some more information? Let me know what you think with a comment.

Thanks for this. I forgot the part about being totally relaxed before stating an affirmation. Will do this! I enjoy your site, it's uplifting, I know I will walk away with tools and ideas to use in life's journey. I hope your readers use the useful posts and tips you share.

Violetsun Yes, that's the trick to use positive affirmations: relaxation first and then affirmations; at least in the morning and in the evening, during the day it's ok to just say or think them after some deep breaths. And thanks for such kind words Marie, these are really the best reward for me. ;)
