I know a girl who does psychic readings using Tarot cards and believe it or not sometimes she does prove right and what she sees actually happens. Not all the times but enough to say that it’s not a matter of chance or probabilities. Is this enough to say that psychic readings are reliable and give correct answers? Can someone foresee our own future?
The biggest fact about the reliability or reality of psychic readings is a concept called self-fulfilling prophecy which is simply that what we believe can happen actually happens. If for example you think that if a black cat crosses your way you’ll get bad luck for the rest of the day chances are very high that something bad will happen to you. Your idea proves right and gets reinforced so any time you see a black cat you “know” that bad luck is on arrival and you’re always right. It’s not really that you provoke accidents to prove you’re right but very similar anyway. Something that you wouldn’t have noticed on a “normal” day gets extremely important thanks to the black cat. Same thing if you believe that the 13th is a very unlucky day. Or passing under a stair, and so on. What you believe becomes true.
Almost every human being is much more aware of what happens in a negative way than in a positive one so for the great majority the self-fulfilling prophecy works extremely well on the negative side. That’s why we need Positive Thinking, we have enough of the Negative one.
Psychic readings rely deeply on self-fulfilling prophecies, whether it’s on purpose or not.
Another fact is that we put more attention on things we want to happen or care about. Some years ago I wanted to go to Japan for a trip, I still want but that’s another story, and while at Milan I begun seeing Japanese people all around the city, wherever I was. Did they appear because I wanted to? Not at all, I was simply more aware of my surroundings especially of Japanese people. I was more aware of them. It’s the same thing that happens when you want to buy a new car and you begin to see that specific model all around you. It’s not that they appear from nowhere, it’s that you notice them as you’re on that wavelength, so to speak.
This is what happens when in psychic readings the medium states that you’re going to meet a very handsome, tall man, or woman. Suddenly you begin to notice all handsome and tall men around and be sure that one or another will get to know you. Was the reading correct or it’s a matter of self-fulfilling prophecy?
A very good point to consider when talking about psychic readings is if the medium can know what he’s talking about you from other sources. Does he know about you and your life? What do you say about yourself? What your clothes tell about you? Do you give any hint? If you’ve ever seen a Mentalist on a show you know that they seem to have a kind of supernatural knowledge of facts while in reality they are simply amazing in extracting information from everything, clothes, how you move and walk, a blink of an eye, etcetera. And they use these information to create a kind of profile of you. Many mediums have the same ability and can have a general idea of you just looking at you while you enter the room and sit down. Ability and a lot of practice but it has nothing to do with what we consider psychic readings.
What in my opinion makes the difference is if the medium speaks about things he can’t know. If you enter the room and he says something like “I’m sorry about the departure of your father” and he can’t really know about it that can be an example of a real psychic reading, obviously not if your father died in a car accident which appeared on every newspaper and the medium knows your surname for example. If you give no hints about yourself but the medium is still able to know things about you then it might be that he or she really has some special powers.
Going back to my friend, let’s say that she is right in what she sees with Tarot cards half of the times and let’s say that 50 percent is due to chance, the self-fulfilling prophecy law or the law of possibilities; how can we justify the other 50 percent? Can it be that she’s right with her psychic readings once in four times because she does really possess psychic abilities? Or everything relates to simply guessing and chance?
I can’t say this, can you?
What’s your opinion on psychic readings? Fake or true? Have you ever had one? Was it correct?
I’d really appreciate if after leaving your comment you can stumble this post and share it with your friends, thank you.
